All About Me

Well, not really all about me but some little details.

Things I like:
chocolate (the darker the better)
organic lemons
80 degree days
books
parsnips, well anything fresh from the garden really
travelling
watching people discover the amazing world of growing their own food

things i’m not really fond of, at all
sand
rude people
cabbage loopers
large bodies of water, especially the ocean
starts with an “s” and ends in “nakes”
people who don’t appreciate sarcasm

Why I think urban farm school is important
I am lucky to know a lot of my family history, not only the stories behind the photographs but the secrets to the recipes that aren’t written on the worn cards. I know what kind of syrup is used in my grandmother’s canned peaches, and what the to put in the jars when pickling cucumbers to make them spicy, a favorite in the family. I also know when to plant corn and how to keep tomatoes until Thanksgiving. Many people, though, have lost touch with the secrets of food production, harvesting, and preserving. And that is why we created urban farm school.

I truly believe that we will soon be facing global food shortages. Sooner than peak oil. And more seriously, than peak oil. Global populations are quickly out-pacing the available and growable agricultural lands while societies continue to develop these lands at a rapid rate. With the loss of agricultural lands and the increase in populations and oil prices food prices will continue to increase and availability will begin to decrease. Citizens will once again need to rely more heavily on their ability to provide food for their families whether it is a container of salad greens or the majority of fruits and vegetables for the table. We are here to help people down that path so that not only families will be stronger and healthier but our communities will be as well.
